Running a business means constantly balancing growth with stability. While many business coaches offer textbook solutions, few have actually built and scaled companies themselves. The difference shows in their advice – theoretical knowledge often falls short when faced with real-world challenges. Through her accounting and advisory firm, Alessia Falanga helps business owners avoid common pitfalls by focusing on what actually works. Her approach, developed over 12 years of hands-on experience, emphasises building strong foundations before attempting rapid growth.

Learning Through Experience

“I am highly experienced in preparing businesses for scale,” Alessia explains, setting herself apart from traditional consultants. She points out a key difference in her approach: “A lot of consultants come in and audit the firm, provide you a whole list of things to do with no strategies on how to do it, and a lot of the time haven’t actually done it themselves.”

Her background spans team restructuring, operational efficiency, and enhancing communication in large corporations. But the real learning came from applying these skills to her own business. “It’s very different when you’re a business owner,” she notes. “I understand that emotions and various factors come into play—it’s not a straightforward, one-size-fits-all situation.”

Alessia recently worked with a client who bought what seemed like a thriving business, planning to scale it quickly. The reality proved more challenging. “She hadn’t evaluated that business properly,” Alessia shares. “She didn’t understand the numbers, she didn’t understand the relationships of the people in that business, and how to restructure the team.” Instead of letting the business fail, they stripped everything back to basics. While difficult, this approach worked. The business emerged stronger, with proper foundations for future growth. “She now has that bedrock to start scaling and building, knowing that her foundation is secure,” Alessia says.

Financial Clarity for Better Decisions

Many business owners lack clear financial understanding, a problem Alessia sees regularly. “Financial clarity is so important – it’s the basis of making decisions for the company,” she explains. Without solid financial knowledge, owners can’t make informed choices about growth or investment. This gap in understanding often leads to poor decisions. “You cannot make educated decisions in terms of investing in certain areas or scaling up in certain spaces of the company if you don’t understand your numbers,” she notes.

Hiring the Right Team

When it comes to hiring, Alessia takes an unexpected stance. “I coach clients to hire on attitude and character,” she says. While technical skills matter, she emphasises on finding people who fit the company culture. “Having the right character and the right attitude and ensuring that a particular person aligns to the goals and mission and vision of the company is really the most important thing.” She warns against micromanagement, especially with experienced hires. “If you continue to micromanage, especially at senior levels, those team members are not going to stick around for very long,” she advises. “They’ve come in because they’re experienced and understand what they’re doing.”

Scaling with a Systematic Approach

Despite growing talk about AI in accounting, Alessia sees increasing demand for personal business coaching. Her firm has doubled in size over 18 months, expanding nationally. She’s developed frameworks and actionable steps to help business owners navigate growth systematically.  “I’ve developed a proven framework that shows exactly what to focus on first and the steps to take to achieve your goals,” she explains. “Instead of just identifying gaps within the business, I help business owners implement solutions and guide them through creating SOPs, handbooks, and all the necessary processes, step by step.”

For those considering appointing a business coach, Alessia practices what she preaches. “I have three different coaches for different areas of my life,” she reveals. “If I’m not an expert in a certain area or I need support in that space, I go and seek that support from somebody who can provide it.” To learn more about Alessia Falanga and her approach, check out her LinkedIn profile.
