For Simon Dawson, motorsport has never been a hobby.
It is a business, a proving ground, and increasingly a route to solving problems far beyond the racetrack.
As Co-Owner of Dawson Technologies, Dawson works at the intersection of motorsport, mobility and clean-energy innovation. The company restores and races historic sports cars, using insights gained from demanding racing environments to assess and accelerate new technologies, particularly in automotive and energy applications.
The premise is straightforward. A system that can perform in the heat, vibration, speed, and pressure of motorsport has been tested in conditions few conventional development environments can replicate.
That is why Dawson sees racing not as an end in itself but as a way to advance what comes next.
A Life Shaped by Performance
Dawson was born into motorsport, though his own professional career began in tennis. Playing professionally gave him an early education in discipline, preparation, and the mental demands of performing under high stakes.
His interest in human performance eventually led him into fitness training and sports therapy, where he began working with professional racing drivers. It was an entry point into a world he already understood instinctively, but one that soon opened the door to a far larger role.
A defining moment came when Dawson was offered the opportunity to run a factory-supported Ferrari GT2 team based in Houston. The team went on to win back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, along with multiple driver and team championships.
The experience altered the direction of his career.
It moved Dawson from supporting performance at an individual level to leading it at an organizational one. In motorsport, the outcome is visible. The preparation, engineering, decisions, and teamwork all arrive at the same point: the race.
“There is no hiding place in this sport,” Dawson says. “You have to deliver, and everyone has a part to play in that.”
The Business Lesson Hidden in Motorsport
Dawson believes many businesses underestimate what motorsport can offer.
Too often, it is treated as a passion project, a sponsorship vehicle or a glamorous place to entertain clients. In reality, he sees it as one of the clearest demonstrations of high-performance culture in the world.
A successful race team must make accurate decisions quickly. It must communicate under pressure, solve problems without delay, and trust the people around it. Those principles are as relevant to a boardroom, a manufacturing operation or a growing company as they are in a pit lane.

From the Racetrack to Energy Resilience
The company’s longer-term ambition extends well beyond racing.
Dawson Technologies is developing and assessing solid-state hydrogen storage technologies with potential applications in off-grid and replacement power. The aim is to help create more dependable energy options for communities, remote locations and larger markets where conventional infrastructure may be costly, unreliable or environmentally damaging.
Its Dawson GTH race car design has provided an important platform for developing knowledge in harsh operating conditions. The team’s motorsport experience is now being applied to the broader challenge of making energy more reliable, easier to maintain, and less harmful to the environment.
Dawson is clear-eyed about the pace of change. The market often rewards immediate returns, he says, while the most important work requires patience and conviction.
“The opportunity is to create what the world is missing,” he says. “If we can offer energy solutions that are more reliable, cost less and are easier to maintain, while reducing environmental impact, that is how we stay ahead.”
Preserving the Substance of Racing
Dawson sees online racing and social media transforming the sport over the coming years. Both will create new commercial opportunities and bring new audiences into motorsport.
But he is wary of an industry becoming more focused on visibility than substance.
“The sport must remain a place where people come to deliver,” he says.
Over the next 12 to 24 months, Dawson Technologies plans to race its restored sports cars at globally recognized circuits, expand customer programs with the brands it works alongside and promote its energy solutions through those influential environments.
The company is also developing an online racing competition that will allow global businesses to own virtual teams, compete for real-world access and build commercial relationships through motorsport.
For Dawson, the work is personal. His proudest achievement is being a father and setting an example for his children through a career built around passion, commitment and good people.
The legacy he hopes to leave is equally direct: to keep opening doors for others.
